How to plant, care for and grow Watsonia
Watsonia is a corm and there are 52 species that is indigenous to South Africa and can also be found in Lesotho and Swaziland. The plant will be 30cm (1m depending on species) tall when it has reached maturity. They are common in the wild and create stunning displays in the natural South African landscape.
Seasons and planting
Watsonia needs light friable and humus-rich soil that has good drainage. They prefer full sun however, they can tolerate some shade. During their active growth period, water well and provide the plant with Hadeco Bulb Food and compost regularly. The lowest temperature that this plant can tolerate is 0°C.
They prefer a dry summer and should only be lifted if they will receive a lot of water during summer (deciduous). The corms should be left in the soil for several years before being disturbed to get their offsets (evergreen).
Propagation
The seed should be sown in autumn. The seeds will take five weeks to germinate and from there it will take them three years to flower. The evergreen species should only be disturbed every five years and only for a brief period in late spring. Once lifted, replant the corms as soon as possible.
