How to plant, care and grow Eucomis
Eucomis is a true bulb. At maturity, it will reach a height of 10-70cm depending on its species: E. autumnalis & E. zambesiaca = 30cm; E. bicolor = 70cm; E. comosa = 60cm; E. humilis = 20cm and E. vandermerwei = 10cm. There are 12 species which are indigenous to South Africa and originated in Lake Malawi in south-central Africa, the Western Cape and the eastern parts of South Africa. They look great in rockeries, containers and a perennial mixed border. Eucomis has a sweet aroma but some dwarf species might not have a pleasant fragrance. They are an extremely rewarding and long- life flower.
Seasons and planting
Eucomis prefers soil that is well-draining and rich. When planting the bulb, ensure that the neck is at soil level and there are 20cm between the bulbs. The plant needs regular and deep watering during its growing season and should be fed Hadeco bulb food after its flowering period and until the beginning of dormancy. The lowest temperature that this plant can tolerate is dependent on the species: E. autumnalis = -5°C and E. bicolor/E. comosa = -15°C.
Propagation
Leave the bulbs in the ground for several seasons before you lift and divide them during their dormancy (winter). They can be propagated by sowing seeds in spring or by removing their offsets during dormancy.
